WHAT CAUSES LAKE EFFECT SNOW? A very cold winter air mass flows over the relatively warmer waters of a Great Lake evaporates forming clouds which fall back to the surface as snow. The largest lake effect snow accumulations typically occur early in winter, thereby removing large volumes of water from the Great Lakes.
