UNDERSTANDING THE LAKE M-H WATER LEVEL SYTEM. In the 1880’s Lake MI-Huron water levels varied four feet – today six feet. East Bay and Lake M-H waters are 49 inches below their 1986 high and 12 inches below average. Water drained out the St. Clair River near Port Huron-Sarnia. Channel erosion increased outflow by scouring the river bottom. The interests of shore owners, commercial shipping, and environment have been damaged. Stopping ice breaking in winter is a helpful first step.
