Chicago Tribune: Without a thick sand cushion, the primarily clay lakebed in shallow waters has been eroding as it takes more of the brunt of waves. The lakebed erodes each year inch by inch, to create taller, more violent waves, which accelerate shoreline erosion. As sand piled up near structures, that sand was hauled to deep waters and permanently disposed. Researchers estimate that from 1889 to 1982, about 2.5 million cubic yards – 12,950 rail cars - of sand were removed.
