Could our area be a climate refuge? YES OR NOT YET, Water could make great lakes a climate refuge. Are we prepared? Ferns, fish, and mammals common to southern forests migrated north 10 miles per year. Will fierce weather cause people to move from danger to safety? Some say warmer winters, ample fresh water, and few wildfires will attract millions of new residents. NOT YET, Great Lakes region is not a ‘climate haven’ Standing tall 600 feet above sea level means we’ll be the winners in a climate lottery. But it’s too soon to buy that ticket. The Region knows the consequences of working against nature. Climate change (may) cause higher highs and lower lows. Stronger storms pose a major threat.
