CHICAGO IS SINKING. HERE’S WHAT THAT MEANS FOR LAKE MICHIGAN AND THE MIDWEST Parts of Canada and northern U.S. once weighted down by a massive glacier are springing back while other parts are sinking; Chicago and southern L. Michigan are sinking 4 to 8 inches per century. The contour separating the rising part from the falling bisects L. Michigan, on a line from Green Bay, WI to Grand Traverse Bay, MI; the far northern end is rising; the rest is lowering. This tilting effect, means higher lake levels for southern L.
